Recently guests gathered for the 6th Annual Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series mural installation that took place in Los Angeles. Local Artist Shawn Warren unveiled his massive public mural, The Moors, at 7300 Melrose Avenue followed by a cocktail reception at E.P. & L.P.
The BOMBAY SAPPHIRE ARTISAN SERIES fosters the talents of emerging artists through a nationwide search for the best up-and-coming names in visual arts. "It's important as an artist and as a black male to create pieces that focus on unknown black narratives. I think its important that knowledge is expanded in parts of history that we are unaware of. I think its important that we know where we come from because our narrative is more than slavery and civil rights," Warren states.
He then explained the meaning of the piece and it's importance. "The Moors had originated in Africa and traveled through parts of Europe and ruled parts of Europe. They were really known for introducing a lot of things that you hear about. From Astronomy, Architecture, Literature, they were the most advanced people of color in existence for hundreds and hundreds of years. For me personally, I feel like it is such an intriguing and powerful narrative to tell on canvas."
"Art is something that can't be censored, I think that is the best way to convey a message," states Warren. "To convey so many parts of history that are unknown to people and it's a good way to educate."
