Sundance Film Festival 2020 - Continues to Strive for Diversity and Inclusion
Over the years diversity in film has been on the rise. Rightfully so, we are seeing more and more roles and inclusion both in front of and behind the camera (thank goodness!) With that being said Macro, is a leading authoritative media brand representing the voice and perspective of persons of color, is heading to Sundance.
For its third of programming at Sundance, the MACRO Lodge will host panels, screenings and conversations with talent that includes Issa Rae, Kerry Washington, Zazie Beetz and America Ferrera, among others from Jan 24 to Jan 27.
“MACRO was founded with a mission to uplift communities and empower the voice of authentic and multidimensional storytellers from the global new majority,” says King. “The launch of MACRO Management with this incredible team of experienced, entrepreneurial artists’ advocates like Gaby and Jelani expands that mission to further support and amplify the next generation of artists and cultural leaders. I couldn’t be more thrilled about this new, exciting vertical for our company and our business."
Last year the festival as a whole released a more diverse lineup with major hitters. Of 112 films in the official selection, 40% are directed or co-directed by a woman, up 3% from 2018. Among the directors in the four primary competition categories (56 of 112), 39% are people of color — that’s also up 3% from the previous year. Those who identified as LGBTQ directed 13% of the year’s films (it is the first year the festival has reported the stat).
There’s a ton of force coming from The Macro Lounge! From intimate chats with Justin Simien of ‘Bad Hair ‘ to Stella Meghie, writer/director of highly anticipated film,The Photograph, , there will not be a shortage of compelling storytelling.
