‘Ma Belle, My Beauty’ - A Film that Beautifully Highlights Culture, Queer Visibility and Polyamory

‘Ma Belle, My Beauty’ was a refreshing escape through the magic of film making. It’s a story that explores culture and highlighting queer visibility and  interracial relationships, as it beautifully explores a Franco-American polyamorous relationship.

Taking place along the beautiful countryside of France, the film follows newlywed musicians Bertie and Fred as they are adjusting to their new life. It’s an easy transition for Fred, the son of French and Spanish parents, but New Orleans native Bertie grapples with a nagging depression that is affecting her singing. Lane—the quirky ex who disappeared from their three-way relationship years ago—suddenly shows up for a surprise visit, bringing new energy and baggage of her own.

First-time feature filmmaker Marion Hill takes us on a tipsy, moody dive into polyamory that holds all of the gravity and complexity of sexual fluidity and triangulation, while maintaining the buoyant atmosphere of a hot summer adventure through the fields of Europe.

“My intention wasn’t to explain polyamory, because it looks different for everyone. It’s a story of the characters within a polyamorous relationship. It’s about love,” states writer and director Marion Hill. “The pillars that serve polyamory communication, understanding oneself and deep empathy for others and the boundaries and needs and wants are. That’s just human.”

‘Ma Belle, My Beauty’ is a success, because it’s the reality of true love, communication, and consent. The two concepts are the foundations for any successful relationship polyamorous or not. It’s a film that takes viewers on a journey of wine-drenched candlelit dinners, lounging creekside that shows all sides of relationships while addressing desires, ambitions, and the importance of transparency. Simply put, it’s a film individuals can relate to. Which is why the film is the winner of the Audience Award in Sundance's NEXT sidebar!
