Once you hear The Temptations sing, you'll do ANYTHING! This statement was easily the motto to live by in the 70s and now at The Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles. Ain't too Proud - The Life and Times of The Temptations recently had its opening night in Los Angeles and will soon be headed to Broadway!

The pre-Broadway hit, followed the lives of the members of the MoTown group as they took the world by storm. The musical did an excellent job of not only showing the highs and lows of the group, it also gave us a better appreciation of the members and a glimpse into their personal lives while performing their treasured hits, including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and so many more. The group was continually challenged within themselves and not to mention the race war that is still very much present today; however, their continued growth and ability to utilize their platform to bring individuals together through music is what mattered and they proved to be a smashing success worldwide!

Derrick Baskin as Otis Williams led the production as the Temptations, James Harkness as Paul Williams, Jawan M. Jacksonas Melvin Franklin, Jeremy Pope as Eddie Kendricks and Ephraim Sykes as David Ruffin. “Ain’t Too Proud” will also feature Esther Antoine,Shawn Bowers, E. Clayton Cornelious, Rodney Earl Jackson Jr., Taylor Symone Jackson, Jahi Kearse, Jarvis B. Manning Jr., Joshua Morgan, Saint Aubyn, Rashidra Scott, Nasia Thomas, Christian Thompson, Curtis Wiley and Candice Marie Woods.

Where rhythm and soul met confidence and powerful vocals, The Temptations was, and continues to be, one of the greatest groups of all time. Otis once stated, “I equate The Temptations with the fabulous New York Yankees who have remained strong for years and years – long after Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig and Reggie Jackson. We look for great songs, which has always been our strong suit: melodies that a five year-old can hum with lyrics that everybody can relate to.” And we couldn't agree more. Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of The Temptations is a story of brotherhood, struggle, love, and loyalty that NEEDS to be seen!

Opening night drew in quite the crowd! John Legend, Tina Knowles, Lena Waithe, were in the building. Even Otis Williams himself, Mary Wilson from another Mo-Town hit group, The Supremes, as well as Barry Gordy - THE man who helped put The Temptations on the map. 

Before the performance Mary Wilson spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the legacy of The Temptations and what it was like trying to make a name for yourself in the industry in the 60s.

“We went through a lot back in the 60s. Black people were not really, black wasn’t beautiful yet. But I think that The Temptations, The Supremes, a lot of the Mo-Town acts we were the ones that helped black become beautiful so I’m very proud of Otis and his career.”
