From Silhouettes to What's Lost Behind - Colony House Discusses The Latest

Indie rockers, Colony House, have been delivering high-energy music for a couple of years now. Now with the release of their third album, Leave What’s Lost Behind Colony is leaving nothing behind! IdentifyLA caught up with Caleb Chapman of Colony House last week to get the inside scoop behind the crave-worthy album!

IdentifyLA: Third album in! How do we feel?!

Caleb Chapman: SO EXCITED! I still feel like a kid making music and passing it out to friends.

IDLA: Tell us about the inspiration behind the third album?

CC: I’m working on the abbreviated version because it’s quite multi-faceted. There were some big shifts happening over the last couple of years for the band that left us a bit confused and unsure of ourselves. So much of this album was about dealing with those insecurities. We tried to approach the writing and recording process from as many different angles as possible to tell help communicate the complexities of this narrative.

IDLA: Favorite song on the album any why?

CC: Not totally a fair question… haha. BUT I’ll try. “Why Even Try” is as close to a diary entry for me that there is. It was a lot easier to write the first half of the song than the back half. It took me nearly two years to finish it. The process of writing this song, in a way, resembles the way life seems to work. The hard moments are always so much more visible, and it usually takes a lot more work to find the beauty amidst it all. However, when I choose to embrace the struggle is when I usually see the reward.

IDLA: Overall the album seems very positive and hopeful. It's almost as if you're letting fans see a different side. Would you agree? Why now?

CC: I always write songs about where I’m at in life. The subject matter is not much of a choice. Every one of us gets a chance to communicate something with our lives, and I want to communicate something that carries hope. I don’t think it’s a different side of Colony House… I think we have always carried the same message. It just continues to evolve as we work our way through life.

IDLA: At first listen, it’s a VERY different feel from the first album! How has the band evolved since the first album?

CC: Well, we have played a TON of shows and nothing makes a band better than playing shows. I view at as equals parts sharpening your skillset and research. When you play shows you get to communicate face-to-face with the people that listen to your music. Through those conversations, you learn what is connecting and what is not. The longer we do this, the better we are trying to get at serving the people who have been around for a while, as well as pushing ourselves into new spaces that might be a little uncomfortable at first. To sum up the answer, I think we are a lot more confident in who we are and what we have to say.

IDLA: Collectively what's been your favorite part about the growth process and finding your place as "Colony House"?

CC: I’m not sure we have found our place yet… and that’s okay. My favorite part is continuing to grow as friends and see where this music takes us. You learn something new with every song and every album.

IDLA: What's next?

CC: We never know the answer to that question. Hopefully, it’s playing shows, writing songs and making new friends.
